Safety in Chemistry
Recognize hazards, assess risks, minimize risks, prepare for emergencies. Educational content is not a substitute for supervision, SDS, or emergency advice.
Chemistry is an experimental science. This site teaches how to think about hazard and risk, not how to bypass supervision. Use the RAMP framework on every procedure, consult the current Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the exact substance and your institution's rules, and follow instructor direction. When in doubt, ask — do not improvise.

R Recognize hazards
Identify what could cause harm: corrosivity (strong acids/bases), flammability, oxidizers, toxicity, pressure build-up, sharps/glass, slips, or unfamiliar reactivity. Elemental hazard ≠ compound hazard: sodium metal vs sodium chloride; chlorine gas vs chloride ion; Cr(VI) vs metallic chromium.
A Assess risks
How likely, how severe, and under what conditions? Consider concentration, amount, exposure route, ventilation, temperature, and who is present (supervision, learner level). A household-available substance does not mean it is safe to combine.
M Minimize risks
Reduce exposure: correct PPE for the task, fume hood when needed, smallest effective quantity, proper labelling, no tasting chemicals, no casual mixing, compatible storage and waste streams. Follow GHS labels and the current SDS.
P Prepare for emergencies
Know spill, fire, and exposure procedures before starting. Locate emergency equipment, keep work area clear, and have local emergency and poison-control numbers. If exposure, spill, fire, or poisoning occurs, follow your product/institution procedure and seek current local emergency guidance immediately — do not rely on a website.

What this site will — and will not — do
- Will: give learner-friendly context (e.g., "concentrated sulfuric acid is corrosive — causes severe burns; always add acid to water") and point you to the SDS and supervision.
- Will: show hazards that depend on form and exposure (metallic mercury vs Hg(II) salts; insoluble BaSO₄ vs soluble BaCl₂; different chromium oxidation states).
- Will not: provide a universal PPE statement that ignores the chemical and procedure.
- Will not: provide medical treatment instructions beyond immediate direction to the product/institution procedure and current local emergency/poison-control guidance.
- Will not: publish unsupervised "recipes" involving flame, pressure vessels, toxic gases, strong acids/bases, reactive metals (Na, K), concentrated oxidizers, or unknown substances. Prefer simulations for concepts that would otherwise require meaningful hazard.
Context-specific callouts
Every lesson, element, compound, reaction, formula, and calculator that carries hazard relevance includes a contextual safety note — not a one-size-fits-all banner. Examples:

Experiment & demonstration policy
If hands-on procedures are published, each must carry a strict schema and dual review (chemistry + safety). Unreviewed experiments remain unpublished.
Required fields for an experiment entry
- Learner level and explicit supervision requirement
- Exact learning goal
- Hazard summary and risk assessment (RAMP)
- Materials, concentrations, quantities with units
- Required controls / PPE / ventilation (substance- and procedure-specific)
- Waste, clean-up, and storage guidance per SDS/local rules
- Emergency considerations (spill, fire, exposure) with referral to SDS + local emergency/poison control
- Prohibited substitutions
- Reviewers (chemistry + safety) and review dates
- Jurisdiction / institution disclaimer — procedures must comply with local regulations; adapt or do not perform where rules differ

No experiment page is currently published. The schema exists as a gate; when procedures are proposed they are reviewed occupantly — drafts do not appear in navigation, related blocks, search, feeds, or sitemap.
